Ellis eager to get back to competition after month-long layoff

Chicago, pre-race:  It's been four weeks since Schumacher Electric Suzuki Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Chip Ellis has ridden his Suzuki in competition and he's eager to get back in the saddle at this weekend's Route 66 NHRA Nationals, the fifth race of the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series for the two-wheel class.

Ellis has had an impressive season so far in his first year racing for Don Schumacher Racing. The Florida native enters the event third in the point standings on the strength of three semifinal finishes and one runner-up effort. He's qualified in the top half of the field at all four events this year, and has been No. 2 qualifier at the last three races. He scored his third career victory at Route 66 Raceway in 2005.

The Schumacher Electric Suzuki team has remained busy during the long layoff between races. "I've been working a lot on the practice tree here at the DSR shop to stay sharp, and Steve Tartaglia (crew chief) has been busy working on engines," said Ellis. "It's kind of like riding a bicycle, you don't forget it.

"I like Route 66 Raceway. We've won there in the past and I'm just excited to be there. I'm actually happy just to be able to ride. It has been a long time since I rode and I'm looking forward to it. Steve has been working really hard and we want to go out there and prove that what we've been working on is paying off.

"What's really going to be unique about racing at Chicago this year is racing for Schumacher Electric and all the folks from the company (based in the Chicago area), who are going to be there. That's going to be really cool. We're doing really well so far this season and I just want to keep going rounds. That's the key to this whole thing. If we can keep doing that and keep having races like we've had so far this season then we're going to be able to make a run at the championship. I'm just really excited and I'm ready to get back to riding."
