Brown blasts to No. 2 spot
Chicago, Friday: Antron Brown raced his David Powers-owned Matco Tools dragster to the provisional No. 2 qualifying position Friday evening at Route 66 Raceway. The two-time Top Fuel winner carded a 4.516-second elapsed time to finish second in the order. Brown, who enters the 10th race on the 2008 schedule ranked second in the Top Fuel standings, overpowered the slick Route 66 Raceway quarter mile on his opening effort on Friday afternoon clocking an elapsed time of 13.021 seconds. That placed the Matco Tools/iLocate GPS car 16th in the Top Fuel order. As the first pair of dragster to make the Friday evening run, Brown used a tune-up from crew chief Lee Beard to blister the ultra-quick Route 66 Raceway track 4.516 seconds at 331.53 mph. That placed Brown in the provisional No. 2 qualifying position. “Man, that was an awesome run,” Brown said. “We had this Matco car too hopped up for the first session and we blew the tires off. Lee Beard and my Matco crew did an awesome job of making the right calls for the Friday night run. The 4.51 at 331 was a huge number. We didn’t hold on to No. 1, but we’re ecstatic about the run.
