Fuller improves to No. 10 spot
Chicago, Saturday: Hot Rod Fuller and his David Powers-owned Caterpillar Top Fuel team had to wait, but the seven-time Top Fuel winner posted his quickest pass of qualifying on his final qualifying lap at 4.602 seconds Saturday evening at Route 66 Raceway. Fuller will start from the No. 10 position for the third time in his career.
Fuller entered the final day of qualifying for the 11th annual Torco Racing Fuels Nationals on the outside looking in after racing to the 14th quickest pass of the day at 5.235-seconds. Competing in front of nearly 1,500 Caterpillar employees from the state of Illinois, Fuller’s yellow-and-black dragster overpowered the track on Saturday’s first lap. The Las Vegas racer pedaled the dragster to a run of 6.049 seconds at 226.16. He remained 14th in the 16-car Top Fuel order. Following a three-hour delay due to a strong storm, Fuller and crew chief Rob Flynn posted their quickest pass of the weekend. The Caterpillar/Matco Tools rail carded a run of 4.602 at 319.60 to finish 10th in the 16-car order. Fuller will make his 75th career Top Fuel start on Sunday. He has amassed seven wins, five poles and 96 round wins.
“It was a tough day and weekend in qualifying here at Chicago this weekend,” Fuller said. “It was tough to wait around, but I’m sure glad we got to make that run. Rob Flynn and our team did a great job of getting this CAT car down the track for the thousands of Caterpillar employees that were cheering us on. We feel good after that run. We have a tough race against (Doug) Kalitta; he’s one of the best ever. We’re going to try and get this CAT car back to the final round at Joliet again.”
Fuller will battle rival Doug Kalitta in the opening round of Top Fuel eliminations at 11 a.m.
