Todd qualifies No. 4 – best of 2008
Chicago, Saturday: J.R. Todd and the Lucas Oil Octane Booster Top Fuel team produced their best qualifying effort of the 2008 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing season with a No 4 starting position for the Torco Race Fuels Nationals at Route 66 Raceway. He qualified with an elapsed time of 4.555 seconds along with a speed of 328.14 mph that he recorded from Friday night qualifying. During Saturday’s last session of qualifying after a three-hour rain delay with Tornado warnings posted in the Chicago area, Todd and his Morgan Lucas racing crew waited patiently and on their competitive pass when qualifying resumed developed an engine problem that created a fire after Todd click off the engine in hopes of saving it. “Yeah, on that last run, we were on a good pass when the car suddenly starting dropping cylinders and blew up,” said Todd. “I have to take the blame for that because when the car began to nose over, I tried to leg it out. I feel bad for waiting all that time and creating extra work for my guys, but its better that it happened now than first round tomorrow. The car is coming around, running good and we’re going in the right direction. We’re working on our consistency for Sunday with a will to go four rounds and meet Morgan in the finals.” On Sunday, Todd will race Doug Herbert in the first round of eliminations and it will mark their first meeting of the year, but overall Herbert has the edge with three round wins to Todd’s two in head-to-head competition.
