Wilkerson No. 9 qualifier
It was hot and humid for today’s first qualifying session and many of the cars struggled to get down the track, but not Wilkerson. He laid down the second quickest E.T. of the round, a solid 4.851 at 316.08 mph. The second round of qualifying was delayed due to tornado warnings. Wilk didn’t let this slow him down as he made his quickest run, a stellar 4.788 at 319.37 mph.
“Our first run today was a good lap,” said Wilkerson. “It was the second quickest run of the round. Then for the next lap the weather changed so much, we just wanted to get down the track. It just ran through the clutch in the middle of the track real bad. We had more left in it, but we’re not disappointed with that run. It should have gone a little faster, but it was a good run. It went from a to b and didn’t hurt a thing. It doesn’t even look like it ran and there’s still plenty in it. But tomorrow is going to be a different day and what we did tonight isn’t going to make any difference. We’re just happy to be qualified for the show. This was a rough deal and we knew it would be at this place. This place has traction; it has teeth. So you have to have it all together when you get here. It will be all good.”
In the first-round, Wilkerson will face the Team Force car, driven by the boss, John Force.
“Oh, we’re not going to care that we have to run Force first,” said Wilkerson. “We’re just going to race the race track and hopefully we’ll get by him.”
