Herbert sails past 500th NHRA elimination round, reaches final four

Chicago, Sunday: Doug Herbert, owner and driver of the SnaponFranchise.com Top Fuel dragster, advanced to the semifinals of the Torco Racing Fuels Route 66 NHRA Nationals.

Herbert scored a win in his 500th NHRA elimination round as he piloted past J.R. Todd. The Top Fuel driver with the quickest average reaction time lived up to his statistics and launched ahead of Todd (.062 of a second to .076), and went on to win with a 4.68 second pass at 293.86 mph while Todd’s dragster succumbed to tire smoke.

After a lengthy rain delay and a tornado watch issued by the National Weather Service, Herbert faced David Grubnic in the second round of eliminations. Again launching first (.047 of a second to .092 of a second), Herbert put the SnaponFranchise.com dragster into the semifinals with his 4.72 second pass at 302.01 mph to Grubnic’s 5.276 second pass.

Semifinal action brought Herbert to the line against Tony Schumacher. After sitting in the sweltering heat, sweat got into Herbert’s eyes during the burnout. As he staged, Herbert was unable to see the light and heard Schumacher drive away.

“I don’t really know what happened,” said Herbert. “Sweat got in my eyes, and I just didn’t hit it right. I messed up. It doesn’t happen very often, but it happened today.

“We moved up one spot to the No. 9 points position, and are on track to keep moving up and fight for the championship in the Countdown to One.

“The guys have faith in me, and I have faith in them. This team will come out ready to win in Englishtown where we went to the finals last year.”
