Double-driving Lucas races to semifinals

Chicago, Sunday: Morgan Lucas raced his Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster, his first since the season-opening NHRA event at Pomona, Ca., and his Top Alcohol dragster to a semi-finals finish at the Torco Race Fuels Nationals at Route 66 Raceway.

Morgan Lucas’ first round match up against Alan Bradshaw saw the Lucas Oil dragster power away from his competitor running an elapsed time of 4.599 seconds, 316.90 mph to Bradshaw’s time of 4.653 seconds, 304.74 mph. Lucas left the starting line first (.049 - .060) with the win never in doubt advancing the 24-year old to the quarterfinals to race two-time NHRA champ, Larry Dixon. It also signified his 150th round of NHRA competition that began with the Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd, Mn. in 2004.

Likewise, he duplicated his efforts in the quarterfinals against the hard-charging Dixon when he again left first (.068 – 075) and muscled his way to the finish line to edge Dixon with a superb time of 4.654 seconds, 307.02 mph to his opponent’s pass of 4.829 seconds, 265.06 mph.

Lucas made his way to the semi-finals, before bowing out against ‘Hot Rod’ Fuller. Lucas rocketed off the starting line only to lose traction and ended up smoking the tires. He recorded a time of 6.345 seconds, 214.08 mph as Fuller reached the finish line first with his pass of 4.678 seconds, 316.45 mph

It was a sporadic day of racing activity with tornado warnings supported by strong winds and heavy rains that delayed the proceedings for three hours after the first round.

“It was a crazy day of being ‘on’ and then having to patiently wait until the storms past,” said Lucas. “I’m very happy with the way not only my car is performing, but also very pleased for J.R.’s (Lucas teammate, Todd) team as well. I feel we’re on our way of making the turn and a day like this shows the dedication of everyone with our teams. Figuring out these cars isn’t easy, so I’m proud and happy for the guys at the progress they’ve shown.

“We didn’t have an easy side of the ladder and having to go against Alan Bradshaw, Larry Dixon and Rod Fuller was a major task, but our Lucas Oil team stepped up the program and got us to the semi-finals…I’m really very happy.”

The NHRA POWERade Top Fuel chase is getting closer and tighter by the race and with only eight races remaining on the regular season; Lucas has now accumulated the sum of 419 points and currently occupies the No. 11 spot. He trails Doug Herbert (448) by 29 points for the No. 10 position in the standings.

Lucas had his hands full doing double-duty driving with his Lucas Oil Alcohol Dragster as well as his nitro ride. He also made it to the semi-finals in that Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series division, defeating Brandon Pierce and John Finke, before losing to Bill Reichert.
