Traction trouble hurts Bernstein

Chicago, pre-race:   Hot, hazy, humid Chicago weather led to tricky track conditions at the Torco Racing Fuels Route 66 Nationals.  As a result, the Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster did not hit its normal quick, fast pace during Sunday’s eliminations.

Driver Brandon Bernstein qualified in the No. 12 position, 4.616/325.30.

In the first round of eliminations, Bernstein faced off against David Grubnic.  Both drivers lost traction down track and were on and off the throttle trying to get power to the ground.  Grubnic crossed the finish line first, 5.132/284.15 to Bernstein’s 5.936/173.54.

“As a driver, you have to be ready to pedal the throttle when it’s hot and the track is slick,” said Bernstein.  “But sometimes you can’t settle the car down quickly enough to get it hooked up again.  It was a challenging and exciting run, but it’s no fun when you lose.”

Bernstein remains seventh in NHRA Top Fuel point standings.
