Capps nabs No. 7
Englishtown, Friday: Ron Capps qualified the NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car in the No. 7 position following two out of four rounds of qualifying for the NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.
Capps established a 4.856-second pass at 317.34 mph, which vaulted him from outside the field into the No. 1 spot at the time. As conditions cooled for the ensuing attempts by the other Funny Car teams, Capps fell to No. 7.
His previous try, on a hot surface, resulted in a 7.459/110.90 and a DNQ (did not qualify) .
As the second pair to take to the track in the second round, staying in the top 12, despite a strong run, was not assured. "I told Ace (crew chief Ed McCulloch) on the radio, that since we were the second pair out we had to do what we had to do," said Capps. "The NAPA guys did a great job again. I think Ace was right, we needed to run better to be sure of being in the top 12, but we stayed in and that's good."
