Herbert advances to quarterfinals
Englishtown, Sunday: Doug Herbert, owner and driver of the SnaponFranchise.com Top Fuel dragster, lead his heavy hearted team to a quarterfinal finish at the Lucas Oil NHRA SuperNationals in Saturday’s events were marked by tragedy as Scott Kalitta, a long time competitor in the NHRA POWERade series, lost his life in a crash during the final funny car qualifying session. Herbert, a long time friend of Kalitta and his family, was heartbroken. After qualifying in the No. 14 position, Herbert squared off against Doug Foley in a somber first round elimination match up. Foley left before the light, taking a red light disqualification. Herbert piloted the SnaponFranchise.com machine to a solid 4.74 second pass at 298.80 mph, ushering him into the second round with lane choice over Rod Fuller. After a brief delay in racing action thanks to a rain shower, Herbert and Fuller pulled into the stage lights. The SnaponFranchise.com dragster lost a cylinder around half track and passed through the lights in 4.69 seconds at 309. 84 mph, just behind Fuller’s 4.59 second pass at 319.75 mph. “This has been a really hard day,” said Herbert. “We lost one of our friends last night. It’s been hard to think about much else. “We had an alright day on the racing front, though. We won a round and gained some points. The SnaponFranchise.com team has been working hard, and I feel like we just need a little luck to swing our way. I’m bringing my daughter Jessie next weekend. I’m sure she will bring us some luck.”
