Humphreys can’t hold off Johnson in first round
Seattle, Sunday: Justin Humphreys did everything possible to get a win over Kurt Johnson in Sunday’s opening round of the Schuck’s Auto Supply Nationals, but his RaceRedi Motorsports Dodge couldn’t hold off Johnson.
Humphreys left the starting line first, .029-second to .050, but the lead wasn’t long enough because Johnson ran the quickest time of the round, 6.617 seconds at 209.39 mph, to turn on the win light. Humphreys came in a 6.646 at 207.75.
“It seems like we haven’t been getting many breaks,” said Humphreys. “You still have to go up and take a swing at it. But we weren’t expecting Kurt to run the quickest run of the day. He’s always a tough competitor.”
Humphreys, however, is happy with the direction his performances are going. “ We have the car running really good and real consistent,” he added. “And we are still in contention for place in the top 10 and the playoffs.”
He is 12th and has 527 points. He trails 11th by 43 points and is 69 behind 10th place with four more races before the beginning of the Countdown to 1.
