Edwards earns first pole since 2001

Sonoma, Saturday: It has been 146 starts since Mike Edwards and the Young Life/Penhall team has entered Sunday’s elimination as the top qualifier, and to the team it is a nice place to be, after they napped the No. 1 spot at the Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals, when his Friday run held up through Saturday.

“All this proves is as a team we are starting to find ourselves,” Edwards said. “From all the guys at the track, to the engine shop, and everyone involved, these kind of accolades makes all the hard work put into this operation pay off. Now if we turn this into a victory, that will be icing on the cake.”

For Edwards, who has one victory from the No. 1 qualifying position during the spring Chicago event in 2001, he knows the road will not be easy.

“It is a great position to be in, but Sunday is a different day; you pull up there, and it’s like you’re the No. 16 qualifier,” he said. “I’m going to race like I always race and go up there like I’m the underdog.”

Edwards, who currently sits seventh in the NHRA Pro Stock points, hopes Sunday allows him end the Western Swing on an upswing in the standings and move him closer to the Countdown.

“I feel like at the last two races I’ve let some points slip away from me. I had mechanical failure in Denver and then driver error in Seattle, so I feel like we should be in a better position, points-wise. But it is what it is and Sunday is another chance to get 118 points.”
