Smith looking to stay on top

Indianapolis, pre-race: Reigning NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Motorcycle Champion, Matt Smith heads to the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, Indiana this weekend with his Nitrofish Buell looking to keep his No. 1 seed.

Smith sits atop the Championship point standings by 73 points over Andrew Hines and he wants it to stay that way as Indy is the last race before the Countdown begins.

“Indy is huge,” said Smith.  “Not only because it is the U.S. Nationals, but because it is the last race to secure your spot in the Countdown and if we can stay No. 1 that is 30 extra points.  Thirty points is a lot when you look at it in the long run.  We will take it one round at a time, but hopefully we can make it stand when the weekend is over.”

Smith has not only won three of the last four races on tour, but the last two consecutive races, Smith has totally dominated.  Smith has been in three consecutive finals at the U.S. Nationals and won “The Big Go” in 2006, so needless to say the Champ has pretty good stats heading into Indy this weekend.

Not only does Smith have momentum and stats on his side, but the red-hot Red Bull athlete Scott Speed will be along side Smith all weekend as well.

Smith will also compete in the Ringers Gloves Pro Bike Battle on Saturday for his chance at a substantial purse.  Smith accumulated points in qualifying over the last year and qualified himself in the second position for the Battle.
