Hammonds eyes improvement

Charlotte, pre-race:  Tom Hammonds was pleased with their runs at the MacTools U.S. Nationals, and he is hoping to improve by qualifying for elimination Sunday at the inaugural NHRA Carolinas Nationals in Charlotte, N.C.

Holding steady at the Indy race after coming off of a seven event hiatus, Hammonds explained that the Chevy Cobalt ran the best it had ever run this season.  He attributes this to the changes made to their chassis to make it more compatible with their engine.

"Our Chevy Cobalt launched the best off the starting line in a long, long time at our last race in Indy," explains Hammonds. "The crew made some great modifications that really allowed me to get down the track well.  We are looking to do the same and hopefully qualify in Charlotte."

The crew, under the leadership of Kenny Tom, is looking to tweak the chassis modifications they made in Indy and anticipate the set-ups to meet weather and track conditions in Charlotte.   This will prove to be tricky because zMax Dragway is a new track with no data for reference.

"We will be racing on a new surface.  Everyone will be racing on a level playing field, so to speak, because there are no notes or data on the track.  Knowing NHRA and Bruton Smith, the surface on the race track will be outstanding."
