KJ is third at qualifying midpoint

Richmond, Friday: Kurt Johnson got his qualifying effort at the Virginia NHRA Nationals off to a good start on Friday, opening with a quick 6.587-second, 209.43 mph pass in the afternoon at Virginia Motorsports Park.  After this remained his run of record following a competitive 6.605-second, 209.23 mph run in the evening session, the Georgia-based driver focused on improving on his third place ranking during one of his remaining two attempts on Saturday.

“We thought our ACDelco Cobalt made a decent run in the afternoon, but looking at the data on the computer afterward, it wasn’t what it should have been, so we knew there was room for improvement.

“As a result, we were looking to gain a little wheel speed in the evening session, so we put on a different set of tires, they didn’t perform the way they did in Memphis last week.  They were actually better than we thought.  However, we did learn something, so for tomorrow we’ll go back to where we were this morning, tweak a few things, and I think we can definitely pick up.”
