Millican nabs 8th qualifying spot

Las Vegas, Friday:  The five-week racing hiatus Clay Millican and the Hope4Sudan/Lend America/Nitro Fish Top Fuel team officially ended Friday when Millican drove the dragster into the No. 7 starting position for Sunday's ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

With crew chief Lance Larsen implementing tune-up changes, Millican covered the 1000-foot track in 3.889 seconds at 315.42 mph -- the day's third-fastest speed.

"Initially, we thought taking five weeks off wasn't a good idea," Millican said, "but it turned out being good for us.  That was a great way for us to start the weekend.  With as many (Top Fuel) cars here (22), making a first run like that was good for us staying qualified."

Larsen spent much of the down time researching his tune-ups and made the alterations that launched the good run.  On the team's second attempt, Larsen decided to go for a quicker time and the car spun the tires, slowing to a 7.169 at 79.51 mph.

"We are in Vegas so Lance gambled on tune-up and missed it, but he had to give it a try."

Millican gets two more attempts Saturday to see if he can improve his position.
