Johnson aims to set tone for 2009 with Finals triumph

Pomona, pre-race: Mopar/J&J Racing Dodge Stratus R/T NHRA POWERade Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson is looking to build some positive momentum for the 2009 Pro Stock season by bringing home a victory in the final event of the 2008 campaign at the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals. The 24th and final race of the year is scheduled for Nov. 13–16 at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona (Calif.). 

Johnson, a Greeneville, Tenn. native, has enjoyed another stellar season in his Mopar HEMI-powered Pro Stocker. The Team Mopar veteran qualified for the NHRA Countdown to 1 playoffs for the second straight year and captured three No. 1 Qualifier Awards—doubling his previous career total. Johnson also scored two straight runner-up finishes (at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals and Schuck’s Auto Supply NHRA Nationals in July) and has advanced to at least the semifinal round eight times.

Johnson’s J&J Racing team, led by crew chief Mark Ingersoll and Johnson’s father, Roy Johnson, put forth a remarkable 2008 performance. The team has helped [Allen] Johnson qualify in the top half of the field in an impressive 21 of 23 2008 NHRA POWERade events to date and is currently third in the points standings of the NHRA Pro Stock Full Throttle Pit Crew Championship.

In addition, Dodge Stratus R/T Pro Stock pilot Johnny Gray will join [Allen] Johnson’s J&J Racing team for the 2009 NHRA campaign, giving both drivers the advantages that come with sharing data. It’s no wonder that [Allen] Johnson is optimistic about next year—and looking to get a head-start with a Pomona win.

“We’re tying to end the season on a high note with a win and set a good tone for next year,” remarked [Allen] Johnson. “We’re going to go out there with the ‘kill’ button still on and hopefully have a little bit of luck. At Vegas we had everything going the right way and had a little bit of dumb luck [a transmission problem during his semifinals run against Jeg Coughlin]. Hopefully, we can get our luck changed at Pomona. That’s the thought, to go out there and win the race and move up into the top five in points and get a good start for next year.”
