Kragen O’Reilly NHRA Winternationals
Schumacher advances past first round
Pomona, Sunday: Just prior to yet another rain storm hitting Southern California, U.S. Army Top Fuel driver Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher posted a first round win here Sunday in the Kragen O'Reilly Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway.
Shortly after Schumacher disposed of Del Cox with a 3.845-second pass at 312.42 mph, the skies opened up for the fourth time in as many days and the NHRA was forced to shift the remainder of the season opener to Monday.
Schumacher is scheduled to take on Brandon Bernstein in the quarterfinals beginning at 11 a.m. PT.
"We had a long day here today with all of the rain delays, but at least we got one round win under our belts," said the Chicago-area resident. "We've got a little momentum now, so we'll try to carry that over into tomorrow."
Given that he recorded the quickest elapsed time of the opening round, Schumacher will have lane choice over Bernstein when action resumes.
"It's always helpful when you get to choose your lane," he added. "But, we still have to get down the track without any problems. With all of the moisture the last few days and the cool temperatures, it's been pretty challenging for all of the crew chiefs."
On Monday, Schumacher will be eager to defend his Winternationals event title from 2008, while delivering an initial victory to his new crew chief, Mike Green, and his new team.
"We're intent on taking care of business," he added.
