Cruz qualifies 14th, faces Capps in round one
Houston, Saturday: Veteran driver Cruz Pedregon wrapped up Saturday qualifying by driving his Advance Auto Parts Monte Carlo Nitro Funny Car to the No. 14 position at Houston Raceway Park.
The 1992 NHRA Funny Car champion made his best run of the weekend to start out the day with a pass of 4.908 seconds at 273.05 mph. The run held after the final session, and he talked about his day on track.
“Our first run was really solid,” Pedregon said. “We made our 4.90 during the middle of the day when the temperatures were up. It was one of the best runs of that session.
“We underestimated the track a little bit on that second run,” Pedregon added. “We left a lot on the table and missed it a little bit. But we learned a lot on that run. The track tightened up a bit as soon as the clouds came out. So that run was extremely valuable as we plan for tomorrow.”
His solid run today in conditions that could resemble Sunday’s expected temperature and humidity ratings reassured Pedregon.
“Anyone can win from any position in drag racing,” Pedregon said. “There have been guys win from the 16th position. We’re going to concentrate on winning our first round and see what happens from there.”
Final eliminations for the NHRA Spring Nationals begin at 11 a.m. (Central) Sunday morning with Pedregon taking on No. 3 qualifier Ron Capps during the first round of competition.
