Cruz starts Vegas weekend eighth

Las Vegas, Friday: Like most everything in Las Vegas, the track at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was sizzling this afternoon during the first qualifying round of the sixth annual NHRA Nationals. Temperatures dropped quite a bit during the second round and track speeds were better as the sun started to go down.

Cruz Pedregon and the Advance Auto Parts Monte Carlo Nitro Funny Car posted a respectable 4.907-second elapsed time at 303.16 mph in Friday’s second qualifying session, which placed him eighth with two to go.

Today’s first run of qualifying was less productive as Pedregon fueled his car down the quarter mile with an elapsed time of 5.015 seconds at 297.88 mph

“The engine was a little lazy today,” said Pedregon. “We’re happy we qualified in the top half of the field, but we were hoping to get more out of tonight’s cooler temperatures.

“(Crew chief) Wes (Cerny) and the rest of the team are working to figure out what needs to be fixed,” Pedregon said. “We are looking forward to some good passes tomorrow.”
