Worsham says "bring on the night"
Chicago, Friday: Del Worsham drove his red Checker, Schuck's, Kragen Funny Car to an early shut-off 5.088 in the stifling heat and humidity during session one on late Friday afternoon, but then pounded out his second-quickest run of the season, a 4.791 late Friday night during session two. A pair of rain delays pushed the final session close to 11:00 pm, but outstanding track conditions more than overcame the damp humid air, allowing teams to step hard on the tune-up. Worsham landed No. 6 overnight.
"Our guys were pretty pumped up before that run, because we made a conscious decision to be aggressive and get and act aggressive," Worsham said. "When you're as frustrated as we've been for months, losing by thousandths every week, it's not hard to get a little tentative. We got our game faces on before that run and the boys wanted a 4.7 on the board. We didn't use it all up there, either, there's still more in it.
"Just as it crossed the line and I was about to lift, it banged pretty hard down there and flared up. The blower knocked the heck out of the hood of the car, so we can either spend all night fixing it or we can haul out the old reliable. This body only had a dozen or so runs on it, but the old one dates back to the fourth race of the year, last year! The thing is about as durable as any body we've ever owned. I don't think we want to wear the guys out after such a long day and long night, so the older one will probably be on the car tomorrow and then we can discuss what we run on Sunday."
