Pressure run puts Yates 14th in field
Chicago, Saturday: Jim Yates reeled off his quickest elapsed time of qualifying in the heat and humidity Saturday afternoon to move into the starting Pro Stock lineup for Sunday's CarQuest Auto Parts Nationals at Route 66 Raceway.
Knocked out of the top 16 Friday, Yates' B&W Trailer Hitches/Wiley-X Eyewear Pontiac responded with a 6.815-second, 202.21-mph effort that left him 14th overall. He faces Greg Anderson (No. 3, 6.769 at 204.98 mph) in the opening round.
"We came off the trailer running strong, but we burned up the clutch Friday night and had to put in a new clutch pack Saturday and adapt it to the conditions," said Yates, of Occoquan, Va. "We were a little aggressive on the first run but we made a good run in the afternoon and got in.
"There's still a lot left in the car and we'll tune it up and give Greg a good run Sunday."
His best previous run was 6.821 seconds
