"The Sarge" retains No. 1 spot

Chicago, Saturday: After a final day of qualifying here Saturday, U.S. Army Top Fuel driver Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher held on to the number one starting spot for tomorrow's CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals at Route 66 Raceway.

Schumacher's 4.508-second pass at 329.58 mph on Friday night held up through two additional qualifying sessions which enabled the Chicago-area resident to pocket his fourth pole of the season.

"It's nice to start number one, especially on the occasion of the U.S. Army's 230th birthday celebration," he offered. "Now, we have to deliver the real present to our soldiers on race day - a win."

For the second straight race, Schumacher will take on Scott Weis, the 16th-place qualifier, in the first round of eliminations.

"He gave us a great race in the first round out at Topeka a couple of weeks ago, so we'll have to be ready," he added.

Schumacher entered the Joliet race 26 points behind leader, Doug Kalitta, in the Top Fuel standings.

"Every race is such a dogfight," said the 2004 NHRA POWERade Top Fuel world champ. "Tomorrow should be no different."
