Wilkerson takes the No. 11 spot

Englishtown, Friday:  After two rounds of qualifying at the 36th annual K&N Filters NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, the Levi, Ray & Shoup Funny Car pilot Tim Wilkerson is qualified in the No. 11 position.

On the first pass, Wilkerson smoked the tires and only ran 6.367 seconds at 150.98 mph.  It was on the second pass, as the evening coolness settled in that a conservative Wilkerson improved to a 4.854 at 319.60 mph.

"The worst thing about leaving Chicago is that you have to lean on your car there," explained Wilkerson, "so there's nothing you can do wrong.  So we were just a little tipped over on our first pass.  So, we backed it up a little for the next run.  At that point, all we wanted to do was go down the track.  We didn't want to take a chance.  Fred (Mandoline) asked what I thought it would run and I told him .84 or .85.  And we're happy with it, it was nice and smooth, went down the track and didn't hurt anything."

However, as the evening's activities came to a close, the team was putting a new engine in the Levi, Ray & Shoup hot rod.

"That was the same motor we ran in Chicago," said Wilkerson.  "It's got seven runs on it, so it's time to take it home and look at it and make sure it's okay."
