Johnson Jr. races to No. 8 spot
Following afternoon rain showers that delayed the start of professional qualifying, Johnson’s Chevy shook the tires on its opening pass as the veteran racer coasted to a 10-second run. Johnson and the Skoal Racing team opened Friday’s qualifying session with a solo pass as T.J. blasted his Don Prudhomme-owned flopper to the 4.945, 310.84 effort to place him solidly in the 16-car Funny Car field with two qualifying sessions remaining.
“We were just a tad bit aggressive on the first pass and the car shook the tires,” Johnson said. “That put us at the front of the order, so we had to back it down a bit to make sure we got in the show. It dropped a hole, so if we get it to run on all eight cylinders, we should get in the mid-4.80s no problem.”
