Cruz lands 13th qualifying position

Denver, Saturday: Cruz Pedregon and the Advance Auto Parts Nitro Funny Car captured the 13th qualifying position for tomorrow’s Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway.

Pedregon, the 1992 POWERade Funny Car World Champion, lapped the historic Bandimere quarter mile in 5.033 seconds at 295.08 mph. He talked about some of the challenges faced this weekend.

“We could be one run away from something big, which is what we learned back in Chicago,” Pedregon said. “We’ve struggled a little bit this weekend because our fuel curve is not where I would like it to be. As a result, the car doesn’t have the power and we’re hurting some parts.

“But at the same time, we could go out tomorrow and dominate the race,” Pedregon added. “That’s where I feel we are as a team. (Crew chief) Wes (Cerny) will evaluate the data, take a look at the four runs we made and put together a good game plan for tomorrow. I’m going to let them take care of the car and I will focus on my race strategy.”

Pedregon will have an early test in round one, as he lines up against Gary Scelzi.
