Dixon sets track speed record, qualifies 3rd

Sonoma, Saturday: Two-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon set a track speed record of 326.71 mph in his Miller Lite dragster en route to the No. 3 qualifying position Saturday at Infineon Raceway after recording a qualifying-best run of 4.550 seconds during qualifying for the 18th annual FRAM-Autolite Nationals.

Dixon posted his best run of the weekend (4.550 seconds at 326.71 mph) Friday evening under the lights at the Bruton Smith-owned race track. It was the quickest run that Dixon has ever clocked at the Sonoma track. Prior to the 4.550 effort, Dixon’s quickest E.T. at Infineon Raceway was 4.584 seconds (2003).

The 1995 NHRA Rookie of the Year recorded a run of 6.758 at 122.68 on Saturday’s first qualifying attempt after the Miller Lite/Ameriquest rail overpowered the hot Infineon Raceway quarter mile. Dixon then blasted his dragster to a 4.677, 309.63 effort to concluded qualifying and remain in the No. 3 spot. It is the third time that Dixon has qualified third this season.

“Tomorrow, I’m sure that we’ll see conditions very similar to what we saw today,” Dixon said. “Hopefully, Dick LaHaie and the crew can make the necessary adjustments so that we have race car that can go rounds.”

Dixon, who won the Sonoma event in 2003, will match up against No. 14 qualifier Scott Weis in the opening round of Top Fuel eliminations
