Schumacher loses in second round

Sonoma, Sunday: U.S. Army Top Fuel driver Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher lost in the second round and in the process dropped to second in the Top Fuel standings.

Schumacher, who qualified number one, eliminated John Smith in the opening round with an impressive 4.540-second pass at 326.40 mph, but was no match for Brandon Bernstein in the second round.

The Chicago native now holds second-place in the standings, 16 points behind Doug Kalitta.

"We smoked the tires about half track against Bernstein and that was it," said the 2004 NHRA POWERade Top Fuel world champion. "It's tough to lose the point lead again, but we'll definitely rebound. The championship chase is just unbelievable this year. It's going to be tight probably to the very end."
