Tim Wilkerson Levi, Ray & Shoup Shelby Mustang Funny Car

Indianapolis, Friday:  Tim Wilkerson blasted his beautiful Levi, Ray & Shoup Funny Car to a 4.779 at 322.65 mph under the lights in the opening round of qualifying today at the 51^st annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals. 

With his header flames reaching toward the sky as he sailed down the Indianapolis Raceway Park quarter-mile, Wilkerson got close to the wall at the top end, which cost him a little E.T. 

"I'm pretty proud of that run," said Wilkerson.  "I spent a lot of time looking at it and thinking about it all day yesterday and today.  I thought it would run an 80 flat, but it was a little snappier than I thought it would be, and the weather was a little nicer than I thought.  It tried to spin the tire a little bit when it tried to lock the clutch.  I got it way out of the groove when it did that.  I probably knocked a hundred off it when I did that.  But it made a nice run and I'm happy with it.  It's a great start and we'll see if we can go a little faster tomorrow night.  Now we're racing for Monday."
