Wilkerson pleased with No. 5 qualifying spot

Indianapolis, Friday:  Tim Wilkerson blasted his beautiful Levi, Ray & Shoup Funny Car to a 4.779 at 322.65 mph under the lights in the opening round of qualifying today at the 51st annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals.

With his header flames reaching toward the sky as he sailed down the Indianapolis Raceway Park quarter-mile, Wilkerson got close to the wall at the top end, which cost him a little E.T.

"I'm pretty proud of that run," said Wilkerson.  "I spent a lot of time looking at it and thinking about it all day yesterday and today.  I thought it would run an 80 flat, but it was a little snappier than I thought it would be, and the weather was a little nicer than I thought.  It tried to spin the tire a little bit when it tried to lock the clutch.  I got it way out of the groove when it did that.  I probably knocked a hundred off it when I did that.  But it made a nice run and I'm happy with it.  It's a great start and we'll see if we can go a little faster tomorrow night.  Now we're racing for Monday."
