Jeg looks to make noise
Indianapolis, Sunday: Jeg Coughlin successfully qualified for a very tough Pro Stock field. He remained consistent Sunday in his Jeg's Mail Order Dodge Stratus R/T, posting a 6.75 in the morning and a 6.77 in the afternoon heat. But like most of the other drivers in the Pro Stock field he didn't find a way to improve on his previously posted time of 6.752 at 203.71 mph. He will now start race day as the No. 14 qualifier.
The good news is twofold. First, Jeg made the field of the most important race of the year. Secondly, he's run within three hundredths of a second of his first-round opponent Kurt Johnson, who qualified third with a 6.728 at 205.35 mph.
"The field is extremely tight top-to-bottom so it's exciting from a driver's standpoint," Jeg said. "If we had been just three hundredths of a second quicker we would be the No. 2 qualifier. Any time it's that close you know you can make up the difference at the starting line. To me, it's anyone's race. As a driver you wouldn't want it any other way.
"Indy is all about seeing who the best driver in the country is each year. It's been like that since the beginning of time so I'm glad this year won't be any different. We have a good, consistent racecar and we'll race the best we can and see what happens."
