Gilbertson back on track at Indy

, Monday: Bob Gilbertson and his Autolite/Prestone team turned the corner and regained the consistency they had at the beginning of the year and won their first round match-up against Tommy Johnson, Jr. at the 51st annual U.S. Nationals.

Gilbertson cranked out a 4.946 second elapsed time at 307.32 mph to easily cover Johnson who went up in smoke at the hit of the throttle.

“I had a crummy light but I had Lady Luck on my side as T.J. boiled the tires and I didn’t see him at all,” Gilbertson said. “The guys gave me a good race car and I felt good about our chances going into the second round.”

Gilbertson went up against the winner of the Skoal Shootout, Del Worsham in the second round as his 4.958 at 304.32 was no match for Worsham’s 4.861-319.14 mph run.

“We’re really pleased about our performance this weekend,” co-crew chief Nick Boninfante added. “This race was a good learning experience for all of us and we look forward to going to the next race at Maple Grove and improving on our tune-up.”
