Tim Wilkerson Levi, Ray & Shoup Shelby Mustang

Las Vegas, Friday: Tim Wilkerson took advantage of the late afternoon cooler temperatures and great track conditions at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway to put his Levi, Ray & Shoup Funny Car into the No. 11 spot after the first day of qualifying at the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals.

In the first qualifying session, Wilkerson dropped a cylinder, which pushed the car close to the wall.  The safe driver that he is, Wilkerson aborted the run and crossed the finish line in 5.312 seconds at 207.85 mph.  Things were very different for the Springfield, Ill. favorite in the second round of qualifying.  This time Wilkerson made a straight, strong pass, clicking it off at 4.829 seconds at 322.81 mph.  With a 4.91 second bump, Wilkerson's good-looking run was only enough for the No. 11 position.

"Our second pass was a good run," said Wilkerson.  "Sure, we wish it was quicker but we really can't complain.  It did just what I told it to do and you can't ask for more than that.  It gave us a good baseline and I think we can improve on it tomorrow."
