Ellis No. 3, Smith No. 6

Las Vegas, Saturday: Chip Ellis and Matt Smith, aboard their G Squared-prepared and owned, S&S-powered Pro Stock Buells, qualified No. 3 and No. 6 respectively at this weekend’s fifth annual NHRA ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

Ellis and Smith ended Friday’s qualifying with Ellis, on the G Squared S&S Buell, in the No. 4 spot and Smith, riding the G2 Red line Oil/Skull Gear/Torco Race Fuels Buell, No. 19.

In Saturday’s first session, both drivers improved.  Ellis ran an elapsed time of 7.224 seconds, moving the Americus, Ga., driver up one position to third.  Smith, from King, N.C., moved into the field when he stopped the finish line lights at 7.240 seconds, good for No. 6.

In the final qualifying session, Ellis ran the second quickest elapsed time of the session, a 7.257 seconds.  Meanwhile, Smith was on a better pass but engine problems once again beset his bike.  Ellis ended qualify in third, while Smith was No. 6.

In the opening round tomorrow, Ellis will square off against Matt Guidera.  Smith is matched against GT Tonglet.

“This is a program that is still developing and we’re learning something every round.  George Smith and I are pleased with our progress thus far,” said George Bryce, who is partners with George Smith in G Squared Motorsports.

“As to Vegas, this is Chip Ellis’ favorite track and we expect to do well here.  We have good history here.  Chip had one of the low times of the final session.  Matt Smith has stepped up his program.  Matt was running even better that last round until he broke something.  We haven’t found out what’s wrong yet but we are putting in a new S&S engine for tomorrow.  We’re going to continue to go in the same direction tomorrow.”
