Monday, September 01, 2008 | It's over ... for now Well, the 2008 Mac Tools U.S. Nationals is complete, joining its 53 predecessors in the record books, and the race certainly lived up to the pre-race billing it gets. The addition of the Countdown to 1 implications only ratcheted up the pressure, even though most of the berths were already locked up.
Thanks for following along with the staff through these blogs. I hope you've enjoyed them over the last few days and that they added to your U.S. Nationals experience here on NHRA.com.

Monday, September 01, 2008 | Sportsman action on the final day of Indy Once pro qualifying ended yesterday and the fields in Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, and Pro Stock Motorcycle were set, the sportsman racers took over O’Reilly Raceway Park with several rounds of eliminations that ran late into the night. In case you missed it, here are some of the highlights.

Monday, September 01, 2008 | Some not-so-well-known Indy traditions With more than 50 years of history, there are plenty of traditions at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, and we on the National DRAGSTER staff have some of our own. Though none of those are 50 years old, they are things we make sure we do each year nonetheless. Food is at the center of many of our traditions, but we also have a couple of non-food "traditions" that have started over the last couple of years.

Monday, September 01, 2008 | Race day happenings There is nothing like race day at Indy. It’s nonstop with storylines in every class and championship pictures unfolding in the Sportsman categories. Marquee matchups are a dime a dozen. At the U.S. Nationals, even the losers stick around and become fans until the race draws to a conclusion.

| Schumacher claims seventh Indy win; Hight, Connolly, S. Johnson also score |
|
With his seventh Top Fuel victory at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, Tony Schumacher also broke two of his own class records – most consecutive victories and most wins in a season – with a sixth straight and 11th overall and tied legendary Top Fuel racer Joe Amato as the class' most prolific winner with 52 career titles. Schumacher defeated Doug Kalitta to bring a dramatic end to the 54th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis. Robert Hight in Funny Car, Dave Connolly in Pro Stock, and Steve Johnson in Pro Stock Motorcycle each won drag racing's most prestigious event for the second time in their respective careers. Hight defeated Jack Beckman, Connolly took out Larry Morgan, and Johnson aced Andrew Hines.

| Dramatic final qualifying sessions set fields for Monday's final eliminations |
|
Qualifying for the 54th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals wrapped up in a fury of speed and drama Sunday at O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis, setting the fields for Monday's final eliminations at the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series' biggest race of the season. Matt Smith (pictured) took over the qualifying lead in Pro Stock Motorcycle with a strong run Sunday morning and Allen Johnson also improved to hold onto his Saturday top spot in Pro Stock. Larry Dixon in Top Fuel and Tony Pedregon in Funny Car also held onto their Saturday lead as the nitro cars struggled as a group and improvements were few and far between in the heat.

| Dixon takes Top Fuel lead; Pedregon, A. Johnson, Arana front other fields |
Three-time Mac Tools U.S. Nationals winner Larry Dixon (pictured) took control of Top Fuel Saturday, jumping to the head of the field to lead qualifying with two runs remaining Sunday at the 54th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis. Reigning NHRA POWERade Funny Car champ Tony Pedregon, who has never won the sport's most prestigious event, leads the fuel coupes, just ahead of his brother, Cruz.
Allen Johnson and Hector Arana, two other competitors looking not only for their first U.S. Nationals wins but also their first Indy poles, are three-fifths of the way to accomplishing half their goals after finishing Saturday atop the Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle fields, respectively.
|

| McClenathan, Hight, A.J., and Krawiec lead opening-day fields in Indianapolis |
A pair of former Mac Tools U.S. Nationals winners jumped to the head of the pack in Top Fuel and Funny Car with two-time Top Fuel winner Cory McClenathan and 2006 Funny Car winner Robert Hight fronting their fields after Friday’s single qualifying session at the 54th annual Big Go at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis. Hight (pictured) and the other low qualifiers will have to survive four more qualifying runs over the next two days to claim the pole.
In the Pro Stock classes, Allen Johnson pushed his Dodge Stratus to the top of the car field while Eddie Krawiec leads all challengers in the Pro Stock Motorcycle class.
