ORLANDO, Fla. -- Results Saturday after the final rounds of qualifying from Orlando Speed World Dragway, the second of six events in the Southeast Divisions NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series. Final qualifying at the Florida Nationals ran late due to a four hour rain delay which cut the Federal-Mogul Dragster, Federal-Mogul Funny Car and Competition Eliminator classes to just two qualifying attempts. The rain brought cooler temperatures which proved to be beneficial to both Jay Payne and Tony Bartone as they recorded elapsed time track records in on their way to the top qualifying positions in the dragster and funny car categories respectively. Payne jumped to the number one spot with a 5.662 second pass at 233.10. Michael Gunderson failed to better his qualifying time of 5.682 from Fridays session which was quick enough to hold onto the number two position. Sunday Results:ORLANDO SPEED WORLD DRAGWAY, Orlando, Florida -- Michael Gunderson and Jay Payne stole track records from each other all weekend in Federal-Mogul Dragster with Gunderson taking home the track speed record of 248.98 along with the win and the points lead in the NHRA Southeast Division. Gunderson pass of 5.692 seconds at 248.96 held off Paynes 5.714 seconds, 245.16 mph. Tony Bartone advanced from the number one qualifying position to take home the win in Federal-Mogul Funny Car. The defending South Eastern Champion used horsepower to overcome a startingline advantage from runner-up Tim Slagle. Bartone recorded a pass of 5.868 seconds at 242 mph to Slagles 6.409 second 197.36 mph run. Notes from Orlando Speed World Dragway NHRA Southeast Federal-Mogul Dragster points leader Doug Kelly failed to qualify and gave up the points lead to event winner Michael Gunderson. Kelly in just his second year of drag racing, began his career as a Mud Bog racer where he claimed numerous wins including several national event victories. Dougs first dragster motor came out of his mud bog racer and produced a 6.06 second quarter mile pass. The Valvoline Team looked as though they would run away with the event, but came up short with Jay Paynes final round loss and number three in the world Dan Fletcher falling in the semi finals of Super Stock. Payne did leave with the track elapsed time record along with $1000 from R J Reynolds as he claimed the Winston Top Qualifier Award. David Rampy advanced to the semi finals in both Competition Eliminator and Super Comp. Rampys A/EA 32 Bantum fell to eventual event winner Rick Hord as Hord squeaked by Rampy at finishline. It was a double breakout in the Super Comp semi-final with Rampy falling to Dean Thompson who went on to capture the Super Comp title. Orlando Speed World Dragway owner Carl Weisinger added a new project to his Dragway duties as he purchased a 1940 Plymoth Coupe that he is restoring. It turns out that this 40 Coupe is the exact same car that he and his dad built when he was 16. Carl and his Dad found car by coincidence through an Early Iron Car Club meeting and traced the cars travel through seven different owners and two states. The majority of the 400 plus contestants will make their way north to Gainesville for the Mac Tools Gatornationals this coming weekend.
