FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NHRA FEDERAL MOGUL DRAG RACING CHAMPIONS BATTLE FOR POINTS AT THUNDER VALLEY THUNDER VALLEY RACEWAY PARK, Noble, Oklahoma--The final race of the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series event presented by O’Reilly Parts in the South Central Division brought some of 1997’s national champions to Noble, Oklahoma. Competition Eliminator national champion Andy Manna Jr. of Covina, Calif., and Super Stock national champion Jimmy DeFrank of Tarzana, Calif., have come to get some extra points at Thunder Valley Raceway Park. There are only three more NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series events left on the roster before the Winston Finals in November. This is one of the final events where some racers can get points. Manna and DeFrank have the national championship on their minds as they travel far from their native California homes to reach higher standings in the points race. Jim DeFrank, father of Jimmy DeFrank explained that “Jimmy can only go to so many races because of his dedication to school. This was a perfect race for him to attend to try and pick up some points to place him in a better position going into the final leg of the race season.” Andy Manna came to this year’s final South Central division race because he wanted to make a serious run at the national championship this year. FEDERAL-MOGUL DRAGSTER DRIVER DARRELL RUSSELL EARNS AN IMPORTANT WIN ON THE ROAD TO THE FINALS THUNDER VALLEY RACEWAY PARK, Noble, Oklahoma -- The final day of the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series event present by O’Reilly Parts was a step in the right direction for Federal- Mogul Dragster driver Darrell Russell. Russell, from Cypress, Texas, is currently in contention for the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series national championship title. He is currently in third place in the race for the title behind Mike Gunderson, of Middleburg, Florida and Rick Santos, of San Leandro, California, who is in the number one position. Russell’s win today at Thunder Valley Raceway Park gave 85 points to place Russell only two points behind Santos. Russell said of his current position “I need to just concentrate on my racing. There are some important national events coming up in Texas [Dallas and Houston] and I want to have a few more great races so I’m in a good position going into the Winston Finals in Pomona, California.” Local Federal-Mogul Funny Car driver Jackie Stidham, of Chickasha, Okla., was not able to make it through the first round due to engine problems. Stidham’s engine broke 60 feet into the track giving a win to Jimmy Jones. This would have been the fourth win in a row for Stidham who said “I’m really disappointed that I went out in the first round, but things like that happen to everyone. I think that one of the most upsetting things about this race was that I had so many friends and family who came out to see me race. I wish I could have given them a better showing.”
