Saturday Qualifying Final:

AND THEN THERE WERE EIGHT... MORRISON, Colo. -- Results Saturday after the final rounds of qualifying from Bandimere Speedway, the third of six events in the NHRA’s West Central Division’s Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series: There were eighteen Federal-Mogul Dragsters competing for eight qualifying positions at the Big A Auto Parts Thunder on the Mountain event at Bandimere Speedway. Those who made the field will run in eliminations beginning at noon Sunday. The other 10 will go home. Following the second round of qualifying Saturday, David Wells’ 5.842 second run put him in the number one position. However, that was short lived when, in the final qualifying session Billy Bybee, of McClean, Texas, ran a 5.822 e.t. while Wells waited his turn. Not to be outdone-- or outrun-- Wells, of LeMars, Iowa, made a 5.799 second pass to reclaim the top qualifier title. “We’re running great right now so we figured the car could run a 5.75,” said Wells. “It got a little loose on the top end so we didn’t quite make that.” With some of the premier Federal-Mogul Dragster drivers on hand this weekend, Wells was not sure he would stay in the number one position. “I figured Jay Payne or Darren Nicholson could outrun us,” he said. “But I was a little surprised that Billy (Bybee) came up as far as he did.” Just for good measure in such a stout field, six out of the eight qualifying cars made passes in the five-second zone. In the Federal-Mogul Funny Car class, Johnny Gray, of Carlsbad, N.M., was the number one qualifier from start to finish. His best pass was today’s 5.921 at 236.90 mph. Top qualifiers in other classes were Tom Snyder of Longmont, Colo., in Comp Eliminator; Randall Klein of Lincoln, Neb., in Super Stock; and Fred Rector of Durango, Colo., in Stock. Gates at Bandimere Speedway open at 8:00 a.m. Sunday and eliminations begin at 9 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Federal-Mogul Funny Cars begin round-one of eliminations at noon. Sunday Results:

IT’S A SWEEP FOR IOWA!! MORRISON, Colo. -- Final results Sunday from Bandimere Speedway, the third of six events in NHRA’s West Central Division’s Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series schedule: Iowa residents David Wells (LeMars) and Cy Chesterman (Sioux City) each took victories at the Big A Auto Parts Thunder on the Mountain event at Bandimere Speedway. Wells took the title in Federal-Mogul Dragster, and Chesterman won in Federal-Mogul Funny Car. In the Federal-Mogul Dragster final Wells, who was the number one qualifier in his class, took on Darren Nicholson, of Laguna Hills, Calif. Wells made his best pass of the weekend in the final, running a 5.76 e.t. at 241.74 mph to Nicholson’s 5.842 e.t. at 241.35 mph. Wells got out of shape during his second-round pass against Jay Payne, and still beat Payne by one-thousandths of a second (5.969 to 5.968). The car turned enough for the spectators near the starting line to be able to read the logo on the side of the car. “That was exciting,” Wells said, grinning. “My air shifter was stuck and I was pounding on it with my fist and I didn’t realize that I was turning the wheel at the same time. It got everyone a little nervous, including me.” In the Federal-Mogul Funny Car final, Johnny Gray, of Carlsbad, N.M., set a track speed record for the class at 240.51 mph, but still lost to Chesterman on a hole-shot. Gray had a better speed and elapsed time, but Chesterman had a superior reaction time of .447. In other categories Comp Eliminator driver Tom Snyder of Longmont, Colo., who won the Federal-Mogul Allstars event in Columbus, Ohio, last week took the win; Abe Loewen of Regine, SK, Canada, won in Super Stock; Jim Hughes of Grand Junction, Colo., took the win in Stock; Greg Carrillo of Phoenix, won in Super Gas; Michael Miller of Santa Fe, N.M., was the winner in Super Comp; Terry Barton of Lincoln, Neb., was the champion in Super Street; and Chad Olivarez of Denver, won in Super Bike.
