Sitko, Bateman repeat in Calgary

8/14/2000

CALGARY, Alb. - Capping an intense week of drag racing action in the Alberta province, Steve Sitko and Roger Bateman claimed their second victories in five days. Both Sitko and Bateman won their respective categories, Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car, at Edmonton Wednesday, then traveled South to Calgary's impressive Race City Speedway for the NHRA Canadian National Open.

Once in Calgary Sitko set low elapsed time in each round of eliminations before gunning down Serge Dion in the final round in a close 6.26-second to 6.33-second duel.

For several seasons Bateman, along with partner Bob Reynolds, have run amok in the Alberta Funny Car wars, however, there is every indication that the Calgary duo's reign may be facing its first serious challenge. Although Bateman again was the class of the field, downing John Evanchuk in the final with a 5.97-second, 240-mph lap, the opposition is closing in.

Evanchuk recorded a 6.08 during qualifying Saturday; Kevin Therres' Eat More candy Lumina hit a 6.19, also during time trials; and Ken Kraus recorded back-to-back 6.16s during eliminations Sunday.

Heavy rain clouds that had surrounded the race track all day finally emptied their contents late Sunday afternoon, forcing NHRA and track officials to reluctantly call a halt to the day's activities, leaving many final rounds undecided.
