Stark, White cruise to victory during Monday finals
INDIANAPOLIS - The final installment of the 2001 North Central Division NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series concluded on Monday evening, one day later than scheduled, in the Sunoco Fall Classic at Indianapolis Raceway Park. More than 650 drag racers competed in the weekend's National Hot Rod Association competition, which was delayed by rain on Saturday and Sunday, for more than $158,000 in cash and contingency awards.
Monday's eliminations featured a dynamic duel in the Federal-Mogul Dragster division, with Keith Stark of Danville, Ill., capturing the victory over Brandon Bernstein of Lake Forest, Calif., with a 5.341 seconds elapsed time, 269.78 mph, to Bernstein's 5.495, 260.56.
"The track at IRP was just amazing," said Stark. "This was just a pretty awesome performance for anybody. We're just glad that it happened to us here this weekend."
In the Federal-Mogul Funny Car division, Marc White of Glendale Heights, Ill., defeated Kim Fritts of Greenup, Ill., with a 5.825, 225.16 to Fritts' 6.144, 176.85.
Other winners throughout weekend competition were Bo Bunter of Floyds Knobs, Ind., in Competition Eliminator; Ken Shawver of Defiance, Ohio, in Super Stock; Phillip Lacy of Louisville, Ky., in Stock Eliminator; Kyle Fickler of Huntley, Ill., in Super Comp; Jon Steldt of Milwaukee, Wis., in Super Gas; and Justin Rosenbohm, of LeClaire, Iowa, in Super Street. Stark and White each took home $1,000 as the Sealed Power Top Qualifier in the Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car divisions. Other low qualifier award winners were Steven Ambrose of Woodhaven, Mich., in Competition Eliminator; Jerry Silvens of Van Buren, Ohio, in Super Stock; and Charles Blossom of Woodbury, Minn., in Stock.
An award for Best Appearing Crew went to Russ Lindert of Manteno, Ill., and his Federal-Mogul Dragster crew. The Best Appearing Car award was Gary Agan of Greenwood, Ind., for his 2001 Agan Red in Super Comp. The Best Engineered Car award went to Wayne Hansen of Wabash, Ind., for his 2001 Chevy S-10. Points champions in the North Central Division Federal-Mogul Series will compete in the NHRA Auto Club Finals in Pomona, Calif., Nov. 8-11.

Rains force postponement of Sunday eliminations; event to finish Monday
INDIANAPOLIS - Continual rainstorms on Sunday forced the postponement of eliminations in the final scheduled day of the NHRA Sunoco Fall Classic Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series event at Indianapolis Raceway Park. As a result, the event will be run starting Monday morning, October 15, at the track with eliminations in all categories.
Between rain showers on Sunday, first round eliminations in Stock and Super Stock were completed. Additionally, a full run of sportsman class drivers in the Super Gas and Super Street categories was completed. More than 600 competitors from across the nation are battling for more than $158,000 in prize money in the final divisional meet of the year.
Top qualifiers in five categories for the event include Keith Stark of Danville, Ill., in Federal-Mogul Dragster; Marc White of Glendale Heights, Ill., in Federal-Mogul Funny Car; Steven Ambrose of Woodhaven, Mich., in Comp Eliminator; Jerry Silveus of Van Buren, Ohio, in Super Stock; and Charles Blossom of Woodbury, Minn., in Stock elimination competition. Gates will open at 6 a.m. on Monday. Racing is expected to begin at 6 a.m. on Monday, with final eliminations set to start about 1 p.m., weather permitting.

Rains force early conclusion in day two
INDIANAPOLIS - Steady rains and a forecast for continued storms forced an early conclusion to day two of the three-day NHRA Sunoco Fall Classic Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series event at Indianapolis Raceway Park on Saturday. Eliminations have been set for Sunday in all categories except Federal-Mogul Dragster, which will have a final qualification session prior to the start of knockout rounds on the final day.
More than 600 competitors from across the nation are battling for more than $158,000 in prize money in the final divisional meet of the year. On Saturday, three drivers jumped into the top qualifying positions heading into Sunday's eliminations. Steven Ambrose of Woodhaven, Mich., notched the top spot in Comp Eliminator. Jerry Silveus of Van Buren, Ohio, claimed the pole in Super Stock, and Charles Blossom of Woodbury, Minn., grabbed the prime position in Stock elimination competition.
Keith Stark of Danville, Ill., continues to hold the top spot in Federal-Mogul Dragster after a dynamic 5.361-second pass on Friday, posting a 270.18-mile per hour top speed. Russ Lindert of Manteno, Ill., broke into the field on Saturday as the fourth fastest qualifier with a 5.522 second run and a top speed of 249.58 mph as six FMD cars were able to run a qualifying pass before rainfall.
In the Federal-Mogul Funny Car division, Marc White of Glendale Heights, Ill., leads the six-car field with a 5.755 elapsed time, running the quarter-mile with a top speed of 249.51 mph on Friday.
Time trials for Super Gas and Super Street also concluded on Saturday. Eliminations in both categories will be run throughout the schedule on Sunday, as will the final eliminations of the Jeg's Super Quick series. Gates will open at 7 a.m. on Sunday. The final qualification session for the Federal-Mogul Dragsters will run as soon as possible Sunday morning. Eliminations in all categories will follow immediately.

Stark, White first-day leaders at Indy
INDIANAPOLIS - The NHRA Sunoco Fall Classic, the final National Hot Rod Association North Central Division Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series event of 2001, began late Friday morning after heavy rains delayed the start of action in the three-day competition at Indianapolis Raceway Park. More than 650 competitors from across the nation are expected for the weekend event, with more than $158,000 in prize money at stake in the final divisional meet of the year.
Friday's action featured more than 500 cars in opening qualifications and time trials. In the highlight of Friday's qualifications, Keith Stark of Danville, Ill., recorded a dynamic 5.361 elapsed time, posting a 270.18-mile per hour top speed, in the Federal-Mogul Dragster category to grab the top spot in the eight-car field of category qualifiers after the first day of the event.
In the Federal-Mogul Funny Car division, Marc White of Glendale Heights, Ill., posted a 5.755 elapsed time, running the quarter-mile with a top speed of 249.51 mph to grab the top qualifying position in the category headed into Saturday.
Other top qualifiers on Friday included Sam Walker of Kokomo, Ind., in the Jeg's Super Quick Series; Santo Volpe of Drums, Pa., in Comp Eliminator; Chuck Gallagher of Holly, Mich., in Super Stock; and Jerry Stealy of East Moline, Ill., in Stock.
Time trials for Super Gas and Super Street also took place Friday, with qualifications in both of those divisions set to begin on Saturday. Overall, participants are competing for points and prize money in nine categories during the event.
Qualifications continue all day Saturday at IRP with gates opening at 7 a.m. Final qualifications and time trials are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car qualifying sessions are scheduled at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. On Sunday, the event will conclude with gates opening at 7 a.m. and final eliminations starting at 8 a.m. Eliminations in the Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car categories will begin at 1 p.m.
