Sunday Results:Results Saturday after qualifying at the Nebraska Motorplex, the fifth of six events in the North Central Division in the 1997 NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series: Winners on the final day of racing here in the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series event also won a race of another sort-- they beat the weather. With rain looming in the not-so-distant future, winners in the elimination rounds were going from the finish line back to the staging lanes, stopping only occasionally for fuel. In the end, Federal-Mogul Dragster driver Bill Ancona beat out Chris Ricketts and, after a very brief rain delay, Federal-Mogul Funny Cars Johnny Gray, who has been locked in a fierce battle for the division lead with Cy Chesterman and Vern Moats, beat out Sam Blue. Both Chesterman and Moats went out in the semi-final rounds. Ancona ran an elapsed time (e.t.) of 5.893 at 239.68 mph to Ricketts 5.905 at 237.78 mph. Ancona, who questioned whether he would even make the field, came back, on his final qualifying run and in the first round of eliminations and set Nebraska Motorplex records on for both e.t. and speed. The low e.t. is 5.756 and the speed was 243.90 mph. Gray, who was the top qualifier in the class, ran an e.t. of 10.340 at 89.74 mph. Blue left before the tree was activated and recorded no time or speed. Joining Ancona and Gray in the Winners Circle were Todd Patterson in Comp Eliminator; top qualifier Randy Mans in Super Stock; Al Corda in Stock; Scott Brown in Super Comp; Ty Schaffer in Super Gas; and Bob Hansen in Super Street.
