Friday after the first round of qualifying at Renegade Raceways’
events in the 1997 NHRA Federal-Mogul Northwest Drag Racing Series: 

After the first round of qualifying in Federal-Mogul Dragster,
Olympia’s Dale Carlson stands No. 1 with a very solid 5.79,
241.28 mph.  That was way ahead of the pack, as No. 2 Tiffany
Hyland of Eugene, Ore., managed a tire-shaking 6.06 at 232.04
mph. In Federal-Mogul Funy Car, the leader in Competition
Eliminator is Bob Panella and his E/Altered ‘94 ChevyThere
are two more runs tomorrow. 

Qualifying for nearly 400 drivers continues tomorrow at 9 a.m.
in all eight Federal-Mogul racing categories. The 250 mph
Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Federal-Mogul Funny Cars and the
sophisticated Competition Eliminator will run at 1 p.m. and
5 p.m. Gates at Renegade Raceways open at 8 a.m. Saturday
and at the same time Sunday when the final round eliminations
will begin. General admission both days is $15 for adults,
$5 for children 8-14 years old and under 8 are free.

Saturday Qualifying Final: 


Saturday rundown after the final rounds of qualifying at
Renegade Raceways, the final of six events in the 1997
NHRA Federal-Mogul Northwest Drag Racing Series:

        Federal Mogul Northwest points leader Tiffani
Hyland, the 28-year-old from Eugene, Ore., moved into
first place on the qualifying list with a 5.75-second run
at 242 mph.  She took the points lead with a win last
week in Denver, Colo.  In Federal-Mogul Funny Car, Bucky
Austin rebounded from Friday’s tire-shaking run and recorded
a 5.98-second blast that ended at 237 mph.

        Meanwhile, Andy Manna and his B/Street Roadster
from Covina, Calif., leads a California charge in
Competition Eliminator, with only Fox Island’s Jim Warter
the only Northwest driver breaking into the top six places.

        Doug Lambeck’s Northridge, Calif.-based SS/C
Modified Camaro leads a Super Stock field that is star-
studded with the top runners in the Northwest.

        Eliminations for more than 300 race cars and
motorcycles begin tomorrow at 9 a.m. in all eight Federal-
Mogul racing categories.  The 250 mph Federal-Mogul Dragsters,
Federal-Mogul Funny Cars and Competition Eliminator will meet
in their first round of head-to-head eliminations at 11 a.m.
Gates at Renegade Raceways open at 8 a.m. tomorrow and the
final round eliminations will begin at 9 a.m.  General
admission is $15 for adults, $5 for children 8-14 years old
and under 8 are free.

Sunday Results: 

Final day of Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series from Renegade
Raceways in Yakima, Wash., the sixth and final race of the
Federal-Mogul Northwest Series:

        YAKIMA, Wash -- There were some surprises at the
NHRA Federal-Mogul Northwest Drag Racing Series here this
weekend.  Perhaps the biggest was that the event was run
at all.  After beautiful weather on Friday and Saturday,
rain settled in on Sunday and the completion of the event
was in doubt until engines fired at 2:30 in the afternoon.

        But most important of the surprises was that No.1
qualifiers Tiffini Hyland and Bucky Austin were not around
for the finals in Federal-Mogul Dragster and Funny Car.
Instead, Mark Hentges of Kent and Brian Hough of Junction
city, Ore., went home with the wins.  But the surprises were
compounded in the finals when both of their opponents, Dale
Carlson and Russ Parker fouled away the quickest runs of the
event.

        Hentges beat Carlson, 5.84, 235.05 mph to a losing
track record 5.71, 244.15 mph package that was wasted by the
red light.  Meanwhile, Hough beat Parker, 6.00, 240.45 mph to
5.86, 236.20 mph, as Parker wasted the quickest run of the
event by leaving a few thousandths of the second too soon.

        Competition Eliminator held more true to form with
Andy Manna, the No. 1 qualified six-cylinder C/Street Roadster
going into the final where he beat No. 2 qualifier Randy Jones
and his E/Altered Pontiac in an all-California final.
