When Wally Parks and his wife, Barbara, were inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame in 1994, they were honored with a 7-foot-tall statue in Wally's likeness. The statue, which weighs close to 450 pounds, was initially designed and created into a clay version by noted sculptor Gary Bodman of Blue Jay, Calif., over a three-month period. Small wax molds of parts of the sculpture were formed at the Mussi Artworks Foundry in Berkeley, Calif., then subassembled and cast in bronze by Piero Mussi and Karl Reichley. The statue was displayed at the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing in Ocala, Fla., until it was transported to Pomona earlier this year. It now greets visitors at the entrance to the NHRA Motorsports Museum.
