FUNNY CAR

Friday's 1st Session

MEMPHIS, TN - RIS - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the 10th annual Pennzoil Nationals presented by AutoZone, listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, position in order following run.:

Left Lane: Wyatt Radke Runs 5.159/262.16 Psn # 1
Right Lane: Ronny Young Runs 5.285/279.85 Psn # 2

We have the nitro floppers taking center stage. Young
launches real hard and then makes a move toward the wall, but
stays with it. Both drivers with some of their quickest
passes ever. If this is any indication, we will be in for a
treat this afternoon. The temperature is in the mid-80's.

Left Lane: Randy Anderson Runs 9.130/ 83.93 Psn # 3
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 11.424/ 73.94 Psn # 4

Both cars launch hard, and lose traction simultaneously,
and they shut'em off.

Left Lane: Mark Oswald Runs 5.700/178.99 Psn # 3
Right Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 5.937/174.24 Psn # 4

Wilkerson hazes the tires about 200 feet down track, and
drives through it, but then loses traction again at about 900
feet. Oswald starts spinning the tires just past half
track, but keeps his foot in it.

Left Lane: Dean Skuza Runs 5.023/306.64 Psn # 1
Right Lane: Kenji Okazaki Runs 7.194/125.13 Psn # 6

Skuza finds the right combination and puts down a new
track ET and MPH record.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 9.540/ 92.39 Psn # 9
Right Lane: Chuck Etchells Runs 5.073/305.81 Psn # 2

Densham gets back onto the wheelie bar and unloads the
tires, while Chuck gets from point A to B without any
problems. Lanes appear to equal as we have #1 qualifier from
the left and #2 from the right.

Left Lane: Al Hofmann Runs 6.906/129.44 Psn # 8
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 5.075/306.22 Psn # 3

Hofmann loses traction right where the track makes the
transition from the concrete to the asphalt. Ron follows
Etchells, and makes a great out of the box pass.

Left Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 5.189/296.93 Psn # 5
Right Lane: Tom Hoover Runs 8.987/ 93.92 Psn #11

Hoover is up in smoke right off the starting line. Bazemore
looks like he has the Team Winston car hooked up, but the et
does show it. Whit explained it was just a soft run, not what
they had planned.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 5.071/307.48 Psn # 2
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.188/294.50 Psn # 6

The Team Castrol match up. Can it compare to the semis
last weekend? Not quite, but still a good race until 1000
feet and that is when Tony started mixing up the cylinders.
Force with a new track mph record, and we are still looking for
our first four second pass here in Memphis.

Left Lane: Dale Creasy, Jr. Runs 8.131/108.36 Psn #13
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 8.746/ 95.84 Psn #14

Creasy starts to smoke the tires, he pedals it, but then
smokes 'em and clicks it off. Worsham is also up in smoke.

That is it for Funny Car. Skuza stays atop the field and
Anderson is on the bump with a 9.130.

                       Best prior run: 5.159/262.16 Was # 5

7:48 PM Radke was in the first pair this afternoon, so
we will see how he fairs tonight being first out.
He improves as both cars have the candle lit all the way to the
finish line. Tim Wilkerson is the first Funny Car driver to
record a four second pass at Memphis Motorsports Park.

Left Lane: Kenji Okazaki Runs 10.264/ 85.59 Now #13
Best prior run: 7.194/125.13 Was #12
Right Lane: Randy Anderson Runs 5.043/293.54 Now # 3
                       Best prior run: 9.130/ 83.93 Was #16

Okazaki loses traction right at the transition, and Randy
Anderson gets it right down the track and off the bump.
Hoover is now on the bump, and he explained how good the track
was since the changes.

Left Lane: Chuck Etchells Runs 5.011/307.27 Now # 2
                       Best prior run: 5.073/305.81 Was # 5
Right Lane: Mark Oswald Runs 16.147/ 57.82 Now #11
Best prior run: 5.700/178.99 Was #11

Etchells gets it up on the tires and just drives it on
through for a picture perfect pass. Oswald loses traction as
soon as he hit the throttle, and clicks it off.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 5.023/281.33 Now # 4
                       Best prior run: 5.075/306.22 Was # 6
Right Lane: Dean Skuza Runs 9.484/ 85.94 Now # 3
                       Best prior run: 5.023/306.64 Was # 3

Capps with a good pass, but gets real close to the
centerline on the top end. Skuza spins the tires right before
the 330' mark and then there are bunch of clutch sparks coming
out from underneath the car.

Left Lane: Tom Hoover Runs 9.299/ 90.05 Now #16
                       Best prior run: 8.987/ 93.92 Was #16
Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 14.065/ 84.42 Now #17
                       Best prior run: 9.540/ 92.39 Was #17

Hoover is sitting on the bump and will want to get off
that spot. He does not do it as he starts to lose taction then
pedals it, but starts to spin again. Then he coasted to
the finish line where it blips it a couple times. Densham is up in
smoke as soon as he leaves the starting line, and clicks it
off.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.070/303.54 Now # 7
                       Best prior run: 5.188/294.50 Was # 8

Best prior run: 6.986/129.44 Was #12

This is a great drag race, as Hofmann is returning to his
old form. He clicked by the 1100' mark. Pedregon has clutch
sparks right off the starting line, he stays with it then puts
out a little oil on the top end as he has a little fire.

Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 5.076/304.77 Now # 9
                       Best prior run: 8.746/ 95.84 Was #15
Right Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 5.528/194.17 Now #11
Best prior run: 5.189/296.93 Was #10

Worsham with a great pass, look at his speed, while
Bazemore loses traction on the top end. He was on a great
pass prior to that.

Left Lane: Jim Blake Runs 5.185/277.77 Now #11
                       No prior time

Blake is making his first appearance of the weekend.
Blake gets off and on the throttle just past half track and
still puts it into the number 11 spot.

Left Lane: Bob Weickgen't Runs 5.214/267.69 Now #13
                       No prior time
Right Lane: John Force Runs 5.150/274.97 Now # 8
                       Best prior run: 5.071/307.48 Was # 8

Wickgenant gets close to the centerline, but is right
with Force for most of the run. Right in the lights,
Weickgenant has a big cloud of smoke, and then a flash of
flame. They get it put out quickly, he should be back for
the next pass.

Right Lane: Dale Creasy, Jr. Runs 5.443/265.80 Now #15
Best prior run: 8.131/108.36 Was #17

Creasy on a nice looking pass, then he runs a 5.44, as Bob
Frey explained the run to us. He is in the show and that bumps
Kenji, and puts Oswald on the bump.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 5.364/197.10 Now #16
                       Best prior run: 11.424/ 73.94 Was #20
Right Lane: Jim Epler Runs 5.356/226.81 Now #15
                       No prior time

Epler with his first pass of the weekend, while Cruz
continues to struggle, as he is not in the show.
They are on good passes and then both click'em off, but they
get in.

Right Lane: Don Sosenka No Time Now #22
                       No prior time

Sosenka has a hard time feeling his way down the track
as he takes out the 330 foot cone. That is it for Funny
Car.

Wilkerson is the only one in the fours tonight, and Cruz is on
the bump with a 5.364.

FUNNY CAR

Saturday's 3rd Session

MEMPHIS, TN - RIS - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the 10th annual Pennzoil Nationals presented by AutoZone, listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run.:

Left Lane: Mark Oswald Runs 5.242/282.84 Now #14
Best prior run: 5.700/178.99 Was #18
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 5.262/223.83 Now # 5
                       Best prior run: 5.023/281.33 Was # 5

We start with Oswald on the outside looking in. He
changes that right here while getting real loose all the way
down the quarter-mile. He skates all over, and gets real
close to the wall. Capps slows on the top end.

Left Lane: Dean Skuza Runs 5.213/244.69 Now # 4
                       Best prior run: 5.023/306.64 Was # 4
Right Lane: Tom Hoover Runs 5.376/246.57 Now #18
                       Best prior run: 8.987/ 93.92 Was #20

Both cars have a little tire smoke right at half track,
and then they are really moving around on the top end. Hoover
is still not in as it takes a 5.356 or better to make it in.

Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 5.177/286.44 Now #11
                       Best prior run: 9.540/ 92.39 Was #21
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.357/214.23 Now # 7
                       Best prior run: 5.070/303.54 Was # 7

Densham finally gets it down the track, and into the
show. Tony is way off of his pace from yesterday. It appears like
everyone is losing traction from half track on.

Left Lane: Al Hofmann Runs 5.139/247.72 Now # 3
                       Best prior run: 5.016/272.80 Was # 3
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 9.508/ 89.97 Now # 9
                       Best prior run: 5.076/304.77 Was # 9

Ronny Young is now on the bump with a 5.285.
Hoffman has yet been able to put back to back runs together
since Gainsville. He does it here with another good clean
pass, and again he clicks it off way early. Worsham
overpowers the track.

Left Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 5.791/179.18 Now #13
Best prior run: 5.189/296.93 Was #13
Right Lane: Jim Blake Runs 5.140/283.73 Now #10
Best prior run: 5.185/277.77 Was #12

Jim's brother Three is celebrating his 33rd birthday
today. Bazemore launches hard and then strikes the tires at
half track, and just blazes them from there on. Blake is on
another great pass. Then way after the finish line Blake has a
big flash of flame, the car is then engulfed in flames, burns
off the parachutes. He is on the brakes hard and then just
bumps it into the wall to get it stopped. Jim is out and okay.
We are down for a clean up.

Left Lane: Brent Fanning Runs 5.448/247.59 Now #21
                       No prior time
Right Lane: Ronny Young Runs 7.279/116.98 Now #16
Best prior run: 5.285/279.85 Was #16

We see the American Dream car for the first time this
weekend with Brent Fanny behind the wheel. He gets it down the
track without any problems, but will have to find a couple
tenths if he wants to play tomorrow. Young goes up in smoke
and will have to stay on the bump for now.

Left Lane: John Force Runs 5.095/291.26 Now # 9
                       Best prior run: 5.071/307.48 Was # 8
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 4.998/308.11 Now # 2
Best prior run: 5.364/197.10 Was #18

This is a great side by side drag race, and it looks like
Cruz has found what had been plaguing them as of late. They
were on a 4.95 pass last night until a little part in the
throttle linkage broke.

Left Lane: Dale Creasy, Jr. Runs 5.758/182.77 Now #21
Best prior run: 5.443/265.80 Was #20
Right Lane: Kenji Okazaki Runs 5.149/290.79 Now #13
Best prior run: 7.194/125.13 Was #22

Kenji goes from the outside to the thirteen spot, while
the Creasy family continues to be on the outside looking in.

Left Lane: Jim Epler Runs 10.259/ 76.73 Now #19
Best prior run: 5.356/226.81 Was #19
Right Lane: Chuck Etchells Runs 5.039/305.79 Now # 3
                       Best prior run: 5.011/307.27 Was # 3

Epler again launches hard and the car gets on the wheelie
bar that cause the tires to unload and he is up in smoke.
Etchells has now laid down three consecutive low 5.0 passes.

Left Lane: Don Sosenka Runs 5.677/248.48 Now #23
                       No prior time

Sosenka is starting to get the feel of the Mr. Magoo
funny car, as he clicks it way early.

Left Lane: Randy Anderson Runs 4.966/310.88 Now # 1
                       Best prior run: 5.043/293.54 Was # 7

We now have a new number one qualifier, and new et and
mph track records.

That is it for the fuel floppers with Bob Weickgeneant in the
bump position at 5.214.

FUNNY CAR

Saturday's 4th Session

MEMPHIS, TN - RIS - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Funny Car at the 10th annual Pennzoil Nationals presented by AutoZone, listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run.:

Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 5.144/297.61 Now #10
Best prior run: 5.078/304.77 Was #10
Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 17.312/ 82.44 Now #14
Best prior run: 5.177/286.44 Was #14

5:23 PM We start with Bob Weickgegnant's 5.214 bump
spot.
Densham does not move five feet before he has problems. This
was a new engine for them. Worsham getting the race day tune
up dialed in.

Left Lane: Bob Weickgen't No Time Now #16
Best prior run: 5.214/267.69 Was #16
Right Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 5.191/286.35 Now #15
Best prior run: 5.189/296.93 Was #15

Bob backfires when they are trying to start the car,
so he will have to wait, watch and wish.

Bazemore gets it down the track, but will not be happy with
this pass. He will stay in the number 15 spot, and there are a
lot good cars on the outside wanting to get in.

Left Lane: Ronny Young Runs 5.261/285.17 Now #18
Best prior run: 5.285/279.85 Was #18
Right Lane: Brent Fanning Runs 12.794/ 55.92 Now #22
Best prior run: 5.448/247.59 Was #22

Here we go with two guys not in the show. Fanny
has major tire shake and clicks it off. Young is on a
good looking pass, but it falls just a little short.

Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 9.254/ 90.61 Now # 3
                       Best prior run: 4.998/308.11 Was # 3
Right Lane: John Force Runs 5.020/309.06 Now # 6
                       Best prior run: 5.071/307.48 Was # 9

We will now see if the McDonalds team has this hot rod
figured out. Well it is hard to tell as he launches hard,
and then smokes the tires right a the transition from
concrete to asphalt. Force steps up, but only to the number
six spot.

Left Lane: Tim Wilkerson Runs 5.664/181.63 Now # 2
                       Best prior run: 4.991/294.59 Was # 2
Right Lane: Dale Creasy, Jr. Runs 8.773/ 94.88 Now #21
Best prior run: 5.443/265.80 Was #21

Creasy makes a move toward the wall, and gets real close
to it by half track causing him to lift. Wilkerson starts
spinning the tires around 900 feet, and the rpms go way up
causing the engine to start hurting itself. We have a
little clean-up.

Left Lane: Kenji Okazaki Runs 5.127/294.69 Now #12
Best prior run: 5.149/290.79 Was #13
Right Lane: Jim Epler Runs 5.085/297.71 Now #11
Best prior run: 5.356/226.81 Was #19

This is a great side by side drag race. They are glued
together until Kenji starts to lose traction. Epler's pass gets him
in the show, bumping Weickgegnant out, and putting
Bazemore on the bubble.

Left Lane: Chuck Etchells Runs 5.006/310.55 Now # 4
                       Best prior run: 5.011/307.27 Was # 4
Right Lane: Wyatt Radke Runs 5.815/174.75 Now #14
Best prior run: 5.145/265.87 Was #14

Etchells continues make consistent runs and improve on
every pass. Radke loses traction on the top end.

Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 5.156/292.96 Now # 8
                       Best prior run: 5.023/281.33 Was # 8
Right Lane: Randy Anderson Runs 5.058/301.00 Now # 1
                       Best prior run: 4.966/310.88 Was # 1

We have couple good passes here. They are stuck together
until just past the 1000 foot mark.

Left Lane: Tom Hoover Runs 5.212/287.90 Now #18
Best prior run: 5.376/246.57 Was #20
Right Lane: Mark Oswald Runs 5.064/300.80 Now # 9
Best prior run: 5.242/282.84 Was #18

Whit Bazemore is the most interested spectator on the
Memphis Motorsports Park grounds. Neither of these very
capable drivers are in the field. Oswald lays down a good
pass, bumping Baemore out of the field. Oswald started to drop
a cylinder, but picked it up as fast as it went away.
Hoover lays down his best pass of the weekend, but will not
get him in.

Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 4.984/308.00 Now # 2
Best prior run: 5.070/303.54 Was #10
Right Lane: Dean Skuza Runs 5.025/305.29 Now # 8
                       Best prior run: 5.023/306.64 Was # 7

Tony moves right into the number two spot, while Skuza
moves into the top half of the field. That is it for qualifying

FUNNY CAR

Sunday's 1st Round

MEMPHIS, TN - RIS - Results of round 1 eliminations in Funny Car at the 10th annual Pennzoil Nationals presented by AutoZone:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Cruz Pedregon 0.510 5.263 246.57
 (L) Kenji Okazaki 0.510 6.008 159.97

11:28 AM The Funny Cars are up and we have Cruz
looking for his first event win of the year. Cruz and
Kenji have faced off once this year and Kenji won that one.
They both lose traction right at the transition and they
both pedal it. Cruz is able to just motor on through while
Kenji goes back up in smoke. He had the car sideways and
had to get out of it.

 (W) Tim Wilkerson 0.630 7.009 134.89
 (L) Jim Blake (Broke)

Blake after thrashing all night to get the car back
together from their engine explosion and fire yesterday
breaks on the burnout. This is lucky for Wilkerson has he
goes up in smoke, pedals it, but is back up in smoke.
Blake puts some oil out on the track, so we are down for a
clean-up. 11:31 AM

 (W) Gary Densham 0.508 5.063 294.40
 (L) Randy Anderson 0.461 5.359 300.20

Anderson has raced Densham one time this year, and he
won that one. 11:45 AM We are back from the clean up.
Anderson is up in smoke, and he pedals it. He is trying to
chase Densham down, but no luck as Densham with his best
pass of the weekend.

 (W) Tony Pedregon 0.510 5.137 277.56
 (L) Wyatt Radke 0.532 5.168 279.85

Pedregon gets a jump on the starting line, and then
has his hands full as he gets out of the groove. Radke is
with Pedregon up until half track. He then spins the tires
and that was all Tony needed to motor on through for the
win. When Radke lifted in the lights he kicked out a rod
and has a fire, and no chutes. He is able to make the
corner and get the car stopped, and the Safety Safari
gets the fire put out. Down for another clean up. 11:51 AM

 (W) Chuck Etchells 0.508 5.094 304.67
 (L) Jim Epler 0.555 5.446 207.08

11:58 AM We are back, and we have the first Funny Car
to run 300 mph facing off against the first Funny Car in
the 4-second zone. Epler rolls in deep, and Etchells cuts
a better light and just extends it out from there.
Etchells will have lane choice over Cruz in round two.

 (W) Al Hofmann 0.529 5.010 278.20
 (L) Del Worsham 0.497 6.161 161.98

Worsham gets out of the gate first, but then loses
traction, he pedals it and then goes up in smoke
again. Hofmann clicks it off early again, but still runs an
.01. Hofmann looks like he might be getting over the hump.

 (W) John Force 0.495 4.933 314.35
 (L) Mark Oswald 0.515 11.114 78.82

Oswald goes up in smoke immediately, apparently the
In-N-OUT gang switched a clutch arm before this run, and
were concerned about it. I don't know if it matters as
Force resets both ends of the track records, and lays down
the fastest pass in NHRA history.

 (W) Ron Capps 0.466 4.999 306.95
 (L) Dean Skuza 0.490 5.062 303.13

This is the third time these two have faced off this
year and Skuza has won the two previous match-ups. Capps
cuts a great light and gets that Copenhagen Chevy Camaro
back into the fours with a great pass. Skuza falls off a
little from his qualifying pace and will have to come back
another day.

Capps gets lane choice over Densham, Force over teammate
Pedregon, and Hofmann with his pick over Wilkerson.

FUNNY CAR

Sunday's 2nd Round

MEMPHIS, TN - RIS - Results of round 2 eliminations in Funny Car at the 10th annual Pennzoil Nationals presented by AutoZone:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Cruz Pedregon 0.490 5.284 276.32
 (L) Chuck Etchells 0.519 15.407 57.87

1:57 PM Etchells has had the most consistent car
out here this weekend. Etchells with mechanical failures
right off the starting line. Cruz does a masterfully job
of starting to feel the car lose traction and feather the
throttle, and drive it into the semi-finals.

 (W) Al Hofmann 0.485 5.001 305.60
 (L) Tim Wilkerson 0.494 8.812 85.38

Hofmann has not drove it all the way through yet this
weekend we will see here. Hofmann keeps his foot in it
this time, as he straight down the track. He
does not hurt any parts, either. Wilkerson goes up in
smoke and gets sideways and then crosses the centerline, and
takes out the half track cones.

 (W) John Force 0.519 4.956 312.17
 (L) Tony Pedregon 0.502 5.111 300.10

2:13 PM We are back from the clean up. Here we go
again with a pair of those Castrol cars. This is a great
drag race until about half track, then Force starts driving
away. Force with resets the national mile per hour record
he set last weekend.

 (W) Ron Capps 0.497 5.079 300.30
 (L) Gary Densham 0.502 5.561 195.05

They leave together and are on a good drag race until
Densham started losing traction on the top end. Capps with
another great job.

FUNNY CAR

Sunday's 3rd Round

MEMPHIS, TN - RIS - Results of round 3 eliminations in Funny Car at the 10th annual Pennzoil Nationals presented by AutoZone:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Cruz Pedregon 0.487 5.056 302.11
 (L) Ron Capps 0.491 5.053 306.22

3:47 PM Roland Leong and crew had to put a new bullet
in the Camaro between rounds. They leave together, and
this is a great drag race with Cruz taking the win. The
margin of victory was .001 or about 5 inches. Again what a
drag race.

 (W) John Force 0.496 4.938 313.26
 (L) Al Hofmann 0.495 5.326 195.56

Force has trouble on the burnout, and does not get any
smoke off the tires. Force and Hofmann are in a drag
race, just like old times until half track. Then Hofmann
starts mixing up the cylinders and has the chutes out by
1000 foot.

Force has lane choice over Cruz in the final.

FUNNY CAR

Sunday's Final Round

MEMPHIS, TN - RIS - Results of final round eliminations in Funny Car at the 10th annual Pennzoil Nationals presented by AutoZone:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) John Force 0.488 5.172 296.34
 (L) Cruz Pedregon 0.481 7.002 127.94

5:48 PM This is a final round match up we have not
seen for a long time. The report is Cruz is not feeling
real well, but would not miss this for anything. Cruz gets
a little jump on the starting line and then starts to lose
traction. He pedals it and then fireballs the engine at
the 330 foot mark. This is a bad one right from the start
as the car is completely engulfed in flames. Cruz finally
gets into the wall past the finish line to get the car
stopped, and the body away from the frame. The car comes to
a stop and is an inferno then after a long time Cruz comes
bailing out. Force began to spin the tires, but was able to
get to the other end.

News is Cruz is being transported to Regional Hospital, the only
reported injury is a burn to Cruz's right hand.
